Short entry
Just a quick entry today:
When I went out birding on the Royal Mile today, I ran into a group of chimps right outside of camp. Well, running into them might be exaggerated. I basically thought: " damn, that is a big blue monkey...." and then I realised it's an old chimp male. Fortunately, Zinta and Jackson were after that group so that I found out that my first chimp's name is Maandi! For him it was probably just another hairless "Muzungu" but for me it was quite a moving experience. Well, then I had to move on since Zinta was taking data, and a stunned white guy below their tree is probably not a very natural setting. I will post a pic of Maani tomorrow. I went on looking for birds for another hour or so and then returned to camp to work on the manuscript for our Brazil data. When I was hanging around in our social pavillon during the afternoon, a troop of baboons came by looking for anything edible. The daughter of one of the staff members here attempted to chase them away with rocks, but they didn't really bother to leave. They were even climbing around on the camp vehicles, which was a great photo opportunity. Also during the afternoon we saw two species of hornbills, a pygmy kingfisher, a woodpecker and tons of blue monkeys.
Well, tomorrow we are off to Masindi again. Tuesday I will finally enter the forest after my quarantine phase..... more tomorrow
